- Every 10th Starfish is the story of a foster family who takes in a foster child who has been in 22 foster homes, almost every group home in the entire state, and almost every psychiatric hospital in the state. She was literally the "foster child from hell!" She also happened to be a former client of the mother who is a psychotherapist (that's me). There were no foster homes available for her. I had to go through so much to be her foster mother. Although the story is built around this one particular foster child, the story could just as well be about any of the large number of foster children I have worked with through out the years. The story is a true story. Everyone loves a comeback story. This story is about both the foster child and the foster family's ability to rise above adversity; the foster child's history of sexual abuse and drug abuse, the foster father's illness, the foster mother's struggle to hold her family together and provide stability for a foster child who has never know stability before this placement, and the family's ability to love 3 and care for each other as their world is falling apart about them.
